Thank You Message
Our heartfelt gratitude to all who participated in the International Convention of the Haitian Diaspora held from August 25th to 27th, 2023, in Montreal. Your presence and commitment contributed to making this event a success. Stay tuned for the next steps in our journey. Together, we are stronger.
Haiti is facing a multidimensional crisis that significantly deteriorates the political, social, and security environment of the country. The socio-economic indicators paint a grim picture. The economy is in ruins. Furthermore, there is a chronic dysfunction spanning over a decade in the democratic institutions. This is so severe that the country has no elected officials at any level of the government. The spectacular assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021 marks in its symbolism and its impact the tipping point of a completely disintegrated state. Moreover, the violence, poverty, poor political practices, and criminality resulting from the quasi-collapse of the state have created a daily fear among Haitian families, preventing them from undertaking their activities. For instance, in the first quarter of 2023, Haiti suffered a significant loss of over 530 deaths and 160,000 people were displaced due to the armed gang warfare. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights estimates that 300 people have been injured and 277 kidnapped. There is an urgent need for action.
The Diaspora Convention : Resolving Crisis for Sustainable Peace. Breaking Walls, Building Bridges is a three-day event that will include :
- Plenary sessions
- Roundtable discussions
With a single focus : finding credible and collaborative solutions to the security crisis - the urgency of the hour.
This initiative aims to develop clear recommendations on how to involve the diaspora in the implementation of any solution, establish a common understanding for a crisis resolution through a national agreement, and develop a strategy for a peaceful and sustainable security in Haiti.
The recommendations will provide a clear path towards resolving the security crisis and engaging the diaspora in the development of Haiti. The convention represents a crucial step in forming a Haitian diaspora civil society that will stand as a vigilant guardian of the Haitian people.
A high-level gathering of stakeholders from Haiti and members of the diaspora, as well as leaders and influencers from the international community in order to come up with credible and collaborative solutions to the security crisis - the urgency of the hour.
This is a civic initiative led by members and leaders of the Haitian diaspora in the United States, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, Latin America, as well as prominent individuals from Haiti.
The convention will take place from August 25 to 27, 2023.
This is a matter of urgency.
